Teddies, Memory Boxes & Bad Day Rehearsals – Inside Mouth Culture’s DIY Chaos

Teddies, Memory Boxes & Bad Day Rehearsals – Inside Mouth Culture’s DIY Chaos

From childhood teddies to band-built studios, Mouth Culture’s Todd and Mason talk touring comforts, the power of a cracked window, and why sometimes your favourite room isn’t in your house at all.

We caught up with the pair backstage at Slam Dunk 2025 for a cosy chat about creative rituals, memory hoarding, and the eternal usefulness of the word tosser.

🧸 What do you take on tour to make it feel like home?

Todd:
I took my childhood teddy -Monkey - with me on tour. I kept him hidden from the lads, but I’ve taken him around the world before, so thought: why not Europe too?

Mason:
Just my pillow really. You can use it in the van, use it at night - always helps.

🌊 Where do you find the most inspiration to write?

Mason:
The ocean. Being near water makes me feel more relaxed and creative. That environment matters for me.

Todd:
But sometimes, you don’t find inspiration - it finds you. You can’t always force it. That’s why our phones are full of random voice memos and recordings from all over the place.

🎸 What’s your favourite space to write music in?

Todd:
We used to live together for five years. Had a demo room with massive windows and loads of light - we wrote 60–70% of our catalogue there.

Mason:
Since moving out, our rehearsal room’s now our studio. It was a strange shift, but now it feels like home again.
We spend more time there than anywhere else - and it shows in the music.

🧂 What’s the weirdest thing in your home that you absolutely love?

Todd:
My cats - Hendrix and Lennon. They’re as weird as me. Full band-house heritage.

Mason:
My memory box - it’s an old Vans shoebox filled with nostalgia: backstage passes, setlists, wristbands… I literally have to squash it shut now. Time to start box #2.

💸 What’s the most extravagant thing you’ve ever bought?

Mason:
A Thrasher x Supreme jacket. I saw it as an investment - took it out skating once and regretted it immediately. It's shredded.

Todd:
Mine’s probably my engagement ring. Definitely not cheap, but definitely worth it.

🗣️ Favourite swear word?

Todd:
Fuck. It’s just solid. Cuts through anything.

Mason:
I’d go with tosser. Is that technically a swear word?

Todd:
Would you call your parents a tosser?

Mason:
No…

Todd:
Exactly. It’s a swear word.

Mason:
Fair. It’s versatile. British insult perfection.
